Babara Kruger Style Art - The Prisoners of Yesterday

1) What do you like about your art?

I like the way the background turned out. It is very grainy and blurry, but it makes the figure walking as well as the words really stand out. I like the way the picture is not completely black and white, but has a few dark colours in it. This also contributes to making the words stand out. Another thing I like is the way the colours in the writing stand out from the background. That's what catches your eye right away.

2) What do you dislike about your art?
I dislike how in some places, the texture looks a bit too grainy. This is especially significant in the lighter areas of the background. I dislike how the words take away from the background. The background is not really that noticeable even though it is really important to the piece. I dislike how the figure in the picture is a bit distorted and deformed because of the filters used.

3) What message are you trying to give?
I really want the road in the picture to represent the journey of life. The words mean that our world has too many people that are hurtful and that live in the past because maybe they were hurt in the past, but they have to realize that the past is over. It means that we have to keep going on our journey of life and help other people to move on and forgive everyone and be forgiven from everyone that has hurt you or that you have hurt in your life.

Barbara Kruger Art Interpretation

a.       What do you see in this piece of art (describe it)?
b.      What kind of message is the artist giving in this piece of art?
c.       Do you like or dislike Kruger’s work? Why?

a) In this picture, there is a man covering his ears to avoid hearing negative words against him, I believe. There is also the words "Believe in Me" because he does not want to hear words that critize who he is or his dreams.
b) I believe that the message the artist is trying to give is that when people don’t give you a chance to prove that you are worthy enough to be believed in or trusted, it is difficult to prove that you can succeed and that you are worth it.  It is not fair when people don’t give you a chance.
c) I think that Kruger’s pieces are very thought provoking. You’re not quite sure what they are about, so you have to interpret it and give your own meaning. I like her pieces because they are relatable. This is because all of Kruger's pieces are very true and provoke self reflection.

My Alter Ego

1. What do you like most about your art?

My favourite part of this piece is the way that everything is at least somewhat opaque. The way that the images are layered really adds to it because you can see through each layer to the ones underneath. This helps each individual picture blend with the other ones better. My favourite part of the picture is the guitar because it really stands out in the picture. I also really like the way all of the colours coordinate with each other.

2. What do you like least about your art?

The thing I like least about my art is that some of my images look like they were pasted on. Because they had square edges, it was difficult to make them look like they fit in with the picture. I also do not like how some of the pictures are cut out such as the image of me. It looks a bit sloppy.

3. What kind of message does your art send to the viewer?

The message that I was hoping to send to the viewer was that my alter ego is a really bright and spiritual person. I think that the colours and images portray that really well. It was supposed to portray me as a musical person who inspires many people with music. This is why I added a crowd of people at the bottom left corner as well as a peace sign.
